Thank Freak It\’s (almost) Friday…

It\’s almost that time of the week again… the weekend!

And to celebrate the fact, I\’ve created a writing prompt that\’s guaranteed to get your creative juices flowing.

This one explores CHARACTER and is designed to delve into your character\’s internal world; their thoughts, memories, physical and emotional sensations, dreams, fears and even their dirty secrets. Who knows what you\’ll discover?!

Hopefully the exercise also helps you get some words on the page.

So, what is going on in your character\’s head?

Drop me a line and let me know at Contact Emily.

Imagine for a moment that you are your character. Step into their skin, inhabit their heart and mind, and take a look at the world through their eyes. Get comfortable…

Now, picture yourself (as your character) at a big birthday bash. Not just any bash, but a party thrown in celebration of a man you secretly can’t stand but publicly pretend to… When someone calls SPEECH! you hover quietly by the food stand, only to be summoned in a moment of spontaneity to pay honour to your nemesis.

Write a scene in which you give this speech, using external and internal monologue as well as sense description. Make note too of the party room and of the other guests. Write for 20 minutes without stopping to edit, and see what you end up with.

Good Luck!

If this prompt has whetted your writing appetite, keep an eye out for next week’s Thank Freak It’s (almost) Friday post, or check out our courses, mentorships and manuscript assessments at WRITING SPARKS.
